Cry of the Mermaid

Cry of the Mermaid is a first-person horror game I worked on as part of a group project for university.

I implemented the bulk of the gameplay mechanics and puzzles. Gameplay revolved around exploration and physical-based puzzles, such as an old-fashioned crane and a fully-functional, 4 octave grand piano.

I thoroughly enjoyed working on this project. Working with other designers and artists allowed me to focus most of my time on creating unique mechanics. The project being part of a university module also allowed me the freedom and time to explore these more complex designs such as the physics puzzles and piano, which gave me the chance to learn about different techniques to implement them in Unreal Engine 4.

The highlight of this project was creating the grand piano. The keys of the piano are created dynamically in the construction script, which means the number of keys, octaves and distance between each key can all be adjusted by changing integer values. Getting the correct audio for each note was done through mathematical manipulation of each note's pitch value based on the difference in frequency between octaves.
