A Day in the Life of a Goblin

A Day in the Life of a Goblin is a game of the 'Goblin' genre developed for Brackeys Game Jam 2024.

Brackeys Game Jam 2024, a week long jam with the theme 'Calm Before the Storm' provided a wonderful opportunity to develop a game further than the 72 hour jams I was used to. Character models, animations, level design, UI design. All these elements of the project were pushed just a little bit further with thanks to the extra development time.

The game's concept arose from the question 'what if it was a goblin that found the powerful magical sword, instead of the human hero?' The original gameplay concept was more of a wave-based melee combat game, however I began having more fun considering the narrative implications of 'the goblin as the hero' and pivoted towards a more RPG-style experience, with dialogue and objectives.

An important factor of A Day in the Life of a Goblin is that I decided very early on to use existing assets for the environment. This is something I often overlook, as I do enjoy creating my own assets for projects but frequently run out of time by the end of a jam. Establishing this decision early, and finding a handful of asset packs that fit the look I was aiming for was great for time-management and helped inform the rest of the game.

Lastly, A Day in the Life of a Goblin is probably the most I've laughed while developing a solo project. From over-sized sword to butt-scratching idle animations, this jam was a great reminder to just enjoy the process and have fun.
