Coven of Critters

Coven of Critters is a third-person platformer developed for the Ludem Dare 56 game jam.

To date, Coven of Critters is the my proudest achievement in a solo project. An even focus between visuals and gameplay allowed me to produce an early prototype that both looked interesting and felt good to play. This combined with some successful early workflows made this project run smoothly through the duration of the jam.

Coven of Critters was heavily inspired by early 2000s platformers such as Scaler (2004) and Mr Muto (2002), in the way progression is tied to unlocking different creatures or 'forms' that provide unique abilities.

This creature-based progression had an extra benefit in managing scope. I was able to outline a set of creatures and abilities, adding or cutting based on which were most suitable for the time-limit of the jam.

Coven of Critters also provided another great opportunity to experience the character modelling, rigging and animating workflow (Cloaky the Chameleon turned out to be my favourite.)

This project was also my first time exploring Unreal Engine 5's motion warping feature, specifically for the witch's dash ability. This small exploration would go onto inform the use of motion warping in my next developed game, Black, White and Red All Over.
