
Counting Blades of Grass
Counting Blades of Grass is a 3D platformer I developed for Global Game Jam 2023.

For the last few solo game jams I'd taken part in, I had focused on getting experience in different areas of game development, such as narrative and technical art. For Global Game Jam 2023, I decided to take it back to my comfort zone and design a game with a simple concept to build upon until the main mechanic felt both fun and polished.

Counting Blades of Grass is also the first project I've worked on that includes character models I have modelled and rigged myself, as Global Game Jam 2023 coincided with my switch from Maya to Blender.

Counting Blades of Grass got very positive feedback from other students when I exhibited it at Teesside University, receiving praise for the feel of the movement as well as areas of the level design. The main point raised by others to improve the game was that it felt too short and there wasn't enough time or space to play around with the movement. This was great feedback to get as I would love to re-use the player character movement and develop the idea further outside of the jam.
